OnLive is a leader in the on-demand, instand-play video game market. While their new release titles will continue to be available as a rental or purchase, every other game in their inventory will be part of the new PlayBack flat-rate plan for $9.99 per month. This cloud based online video plan, which is in beta until January 15, 2011, offers a month to month agreement that can be canceled at any time. OnLive will continue to grow the number of titles in the PlayBack plan which is currently at about 40. Here are a few of the current titles that are part of the new plan.
- NBA® 2K10, 2K Sports
- Tomb Raider™: Underworld, Square-Enix
- Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X.™, Ubisoft
- LEGO® Batman™, Warner Bros
- Saw, Konami
PlayPass is the current plan for individual rentals or purchases. Titles are priced from $3.99 to $49.99. Both plans are available on Macs or PCs through a browser with a small plug-in. This is a great way for a gamer to try a game for a few days before they drop $60 in a new title.
OnLive is also releasing the OnLive Game System that allows instant play on an HDTV. The OnLive Game System sells for $99 and comes with a controller and a game. If you buy the console now, you will have free access to the PlayBack beta service which runs until January 15, 2011.
OnLive does recommend using 801.11n for Wi-Fi but the minimum they require is 801.11g. Of course, a wired connection should be used if it's available for you. Look for my upcoming review of the OnLive Game Console.
