The top 5 programming languages according to the TIOBE Community Index as of January 2011 are:
Compared to October 2011 TIOBE Community Index, the top 4 positions are the same. The Python language has overtaken Visual Basic as the 5th ranked programming language. In October, Python was ranked 7th so this is quite a move up the scale.
Python 3.0 was released in late 2008 and has been growing quickly every since. Python is used by Yahoo, Google, NASA and others. Python is truly cross platform with support for Linux, Windows and the Mac.
Objective-C was another mover in 2010. It started the year in 12th place and ended the year in 8th place. Objective-C is an object-oriented language developed by Apple. It is used in the Mac OS X and iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad).
