Mark Watkns, CEO of Goby, wrote an interesting article for ReadWriteWeb titled, "2011: The Year the Check-in Died". In this article, Mark points out that even with increased membership (currently 6 million), Foursquare check-ins per user are declining.
He also points out the fact that check-in services can work in New York City where your friends are within a couple of miles. However, in a city like Los Angeles, everything is to spread out for the service to be optimized.
