I'm surprised, because this was already the case in Canada, but finally US customers will be able to purchase the new iPhone 5 without committing to a carrier.
This is good news for mobile users, and reminds me of my current pet peeve. Not uncooperative carriers, but uncooperative voice command support. Siri has not been very helpful to me. I unpack the issue of mobile voice commands in my latest article here.
