People often look towards the patent filings of major tech companies as fodder for speculation about where the company is going. A number of people were surprised to see that in December, Apple filed a number of patents related to a proprietary wind turbine. Why is Apple looking to make wind turbines?
I'm actually not that surprised by this development. In my opinion, many of the biggest tech companies are competing via their data centers. While Apple uses hardware, Amazon uses retail and Google uses the web, the real competition is over who manages their users data. Whoever gets the data gets the cash. This means that data centers are part of all of these companies core business, and efficiency is key to winning this battle.
This is a great example of where green tech is going, developing innovations where business and environmental goals align. I provide an overview of the biggest trends in green technology in my latest article.
