ODBC stands for Open Database Connectivity. ODBC is a standard method for accessing data, which allows any application to connect to any database. ODBC handles the connection using a middle layer called the database driver which sits in between the application and the RDBMS.

ODBC was released in 1992 by Microsoft, and the current version is 3.8 which was released in 2009.
