New Slicers in Excel 2010 continue to move Microsoft closer to having a complete BI (Business Intelligence) platform for enterprises. The new Slicer is a visual filter within an Excel 2010 Pivot Table. Slicers provide an alternative to the Report Filter within a Pivot Table. The problem with the traditional Report Filter is when you select multiple items from the filter. You are required to actually open the Pivot Table to see what is selected.
With the new Slicer in Excel 2010, the Report Filter is replaced by buttons that represent the available items in the filter. This does away with the need to open the drop-down lists to modify the filter or even see what is filtered.
Excel 2010 Slicers can also be customized by changing the Slicer Style. In addition, Slicers can be added programmatically. Take a look at my detailed tutorial on configuring an Excel 2010 Pivot Table for BI.
